Income Tax Department to Issue Biometric PAN Cards

The Comptroller and Auditor General(CAG) report for 2010-11 on direct taxes, tabled in Parliament recently, has revealed that 958 lakh (95.8 million) PANs were issued up to March 2010 but I-T returns filed in the last fiscal were only 340.9 lakh (34.09 million). This Clearly implies that there is a gap between PAN holders and the number of returns filed (617.1 lakh that is 61.7 million). Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) identified the reasons for the gap, the CAG has said it may be due to issuance of multiple PAN cards and death of some PAN card holders.
So the Government is now Taking one Step ahead with the decision to issue biometric PAN cards to Tax Payers to keep duplicate and fake ones Out.
This way IT Dept can ensure that a single Tax Payer is not issued multiple cards.
  • This Concept of Biometric PAN Card  was Proposed Earlier by P Chidambaram
  • Biometric PAN Card will have the Finger Prints(From Both Hands) and Face of Tax Payer
  • Duplicate and Fake Cards Can be Avoided
  • Existing PAN Holders could be opt for Applying Biometric Cards, But may not be Mandatory
  • According to sources, It is expected that the first Biometric PAN Card could be issued by late this year
